Women's Basketball & Campus Scenes - 1902
|
Few people know that women formed the first basketball team in school
history three to four years before men formed a team. Although these
teams only played against other teams in the school, the game invented by
James Naismith in 1891 made its way to the CSU campus in 1899. These
three extremely rare photos show the women playing basketball on the
south side of Old Main with some sort of tent next to them.
The women are also known to have played in the college armory which
used to be located across College Avenue from where Colorado Field
was built in 1912. The first gymnasium was built in 1903 when the third
athletic council added men's basketball. The men and women shared this
gym (not at the same time, that was taboo) until 1923 when Ammons Hall
was built. The men played at the Old Main gym until the new gym, known
as the South College Gym, was opened in the fall of 1926.
Note the backboard was made of wooden boards and chain-link fence
type material.
These campus scenes were taken by the same student that
shot the athletic pictures. Some are classic photos many
CSU history fans will recognize and others are very rare.
